Aaj ki raat mein apna geet kesa likhon
Konsa sur is sham ki khatir
Konsi nazm iss chand raat ki nazr karoon?

Kisi bagley ki dil soz cheekh key manind
Taire subah key geet key manind
Jaise kisi bhikari ki dil khrash sada
Patheron peh naatchti nadia ki nawa
Vadion mein gonjti cheekhon ki tarah
Hawaon peh tairti shadmani ki manind?

Uglian kanpti hein, larzati hein
Rooh massart aur dukh ke beech dolti hey
Umeed o yaas ke darmeian jaan rolti hey

Phool jo maqbre ki chadar ki zeenat banei
Gajre ki kalian jo kisi zulf mein sajein
Zinda dili, janazei; chhekhain, qaiqahei
Jalte bhujtei qumqumei, shamaein aur katbei

Kia papand e tahreer karoon

Koi raseela sarood, ya dard bhara geet
Pur massart naghma, alam bhara sangeet?
