Syed Amanullah Meer Taqi

Meer has been called the Imam (leader/pioneer) of Urdu shayari and this was accepted by the greatest Urdu poets. Shayars of the stature of NaasiKH, GHalib and Zauq used to call him Ustad as is evidenced by these shers:

rekhta ke tum hi ustaad nahiN ho "GHalib"
kahte haiN agle zamane meN koi Meer bhi thA
[rekhta = Urdu]
"GHalib" apna yeh aqeeda hai ba-qoul-e-NaasiKH
aap be-bahra hai jo motqid-e-Meer nahiN
[ba-qoul-e-NaasiKH = quoting NaasiKH]
[be-bahra = poor]
[motqid-e-Meer = follower of Meer]
and
na huA par na huA Meer ka andAz naseeb
"Zauq" yaaroN ne bohot zor GHazal meN mara
Instead of using high-falutin' Faarsi, Meer would use a common and easy to understand style of narration which not only increased the simplicity and beauty of GHazal, but also magnified it's effect to an extent that would leave the listener spell-bound.
Syed Amanullah Meer Taqi was the only son of a Sufi saint, Meer Muttaqi. His father, while on death bed, instructed Meer to "Adopt the path of love. A life without love is an ordeal and losing one's heart in love is the real art. Though this path is riddled with difficulties, love is what drives the world." This is a philosophy reflected by Meer in most of his works.

After his father's death, at the age of 11 years, Meer left his home town of Akbarabad for Delhi. He found his patrons among the Rajas and Nawabs there, but the circumstances did not allow him much rest. After Delhi was ruined, he went to Lucknow. Even here, he got no respite. He spent all his life like a wanderer in search of peace.

[jaam'a-e-eHraam = pilgrim's robe] [zaaHid = preacher]
[Haram = mosque/kaaba] [naa-maHram = immodest/impure]

[kuchaa-e-dildaar = lover's lane]

dil ke ta'iN aatish-e-hijraaN se bachaayaa na gayaa
ghar jalaa saamne par hamse bujhaayaa na gayaa
[dil ke ta'iN = the heart]
[aatish-e-hijraaN = pangs of separation]

kyaa tunak hauslaa the deedaa-o-dil apne aah
ek dam raaz moHabbat kaa chhupaayaa na gayaa
[tunak hauslaa = impatient]
[deedaa-o-dil = eyes and heart]

dil jo deedaar kaa qa'el ki bohot bhuukaa thaa
is sitam-kushtaa se yak zaKHm bhee khaayaa na gayaa
[sitam-kushtaa = oppressed/tortured]

shahar-e-dil aah 'ajab ja'e thee par uske ga'e
aisaa ujRaa ki kisee taraH basaayaa na gayaa
[ja'e = place]

[ashq = tears] [lahu = blood]

hosh jaatA nahiN rahA lekin
jab woh aatA hai tab nahiN aatA

griyaa kuchh be-sabab nahiN aatA
[ruKHsat = depart] [KHwahish = desire]
[griyaa = weeping] [be-sabab = without reason]

'ishq ka HausalA hai shart warna
baat ka kis ko Dhab nahiN aatA
[Hausala = capacity] [Dhab = way/style]

ji meN kyA-kyA hai apne ai hamdam
har suKHan taa ba-lab nahiN aatA
[suKHan = speech] [taa = but] [ba-lab = till the lips]

varanaa dilabar-e-naadaaN bhee is dard kaa chaaraa jaane hai
[chaarAgaree = treatment] [beemaaree-e-dil = love]
[rasm-e-shahar-e-husn = custom of the city of beauties]
[dilbar-e-naadaaN = naive beloved]

kyaa hi shikaar-farebi par maGroor hai woh sayyad bachcha
ta'er uRte hawa meN saare apni usaara jaane hai

mehr-o-vafaa-o-lutf-o-inaayat ek se vaaqif in meN naheeN
aur to sab kuchh tanz-o-kanaayaa ramz-o-ishaaraa jaane hai
[mehr-o-vafaa-o-lutf-o-inaayat = mercy, trust, joys, favors]
[vaaqif = aware]
[tanz-o-kanaayaa = taunting, teasing]
[ramz-o-ishaaraa = suggestive, hinting]

kyaa kyaa fitane sar par usake laataa hai maashuuq apanaa
jis bedil betaab-o-tavaaN ko ishq kaa maaraa jaane hai
[fitane = ordeals, trials] [maashuuq = beloved]
[bedil = heartless] [betaab-o-tavaaN = restless, weak]

aashiq to murda hai hamesha jee uTh-ta hai dekhe use
yaar ke aa jaane ko yakaayak umr do baara jaane hai

raKHnoN se deewaar-e-chaman ke muNh ko le hai chhipaa ya'ani
un suraaKHoN ke Tuk rahne ko sou ka nazaaraa jaane hai

tashna-e-KHuN hai apna kitna "Meer" bhi naadaaN talKHi-kash
damdaar aab-e-teGh ko uske aab-e-gawara jaane hai

mujhe bohat khushi hui is forum per is tarah ki post dekh ker.
aap ne meer ke bare mein bohat mufeed aur kaaraamed maalumaat is forum per pohchaayee hain.
yaqeenan meer ka martaba urdu ghazel ke hawale se bohat buland hai aur is mein koee 2 raayei naheen hain, isi liye unhein "shahansha e ghazel" kaha jaataa hai.
meer ka yeh shayr meer ke taghazzul ke kamal aur un ke fun ki gehraayee ka muunh bolta saboot hai.
"sarhane meer ke aahista bolo"
"abhi tuk rote rote so gaya hai"

Hasrat ne meer ke bare mein kyaa khoob kaha hai

"shayr mere bhi hain pur dard lekin hasrat"
"meer ka shaiva e guftaar kahan se laayoon"

mein aap ko mubarakbaad deta hoon friendnidhi ke aap ne is nahiyet ahmiyet ki shakhsiyet ko is forum per rushanaas karaya.

after a long time i've visited this site.
after reading ur post i think i missed alot in these 2 years that i didnt visited shayri.com actually just b'coz of very tight schedule i never get time to read or write on this site. any way ur thoughts abt Meer are really appriciable and thanx for ur kind help in awaring us abt such an appriciable personality....

insha allah very soon ill be on board with my new gazals.

At my first glimpse on this forum, because i have just joined this forum, i have found such a tremendous effort presented by some members of this forum as a tribute to Mir's marvelous work.

Guys, let me tell you one thing, i am not a poet but i like to read poetry and discuss it with people in a friendly environment. I know, this section is not for discussions about poetry but i am quoting my words here only because of the significance of the issue raised here.

When i read the text posted here by all of you regarding Mir's poetry i thought lets find some other works done by Mir. So, in response to my inspiration, i have found a comparison of the biographies and works of two legends of poetry named as MIR and GHALIB. which was very beneficial to me and i wanted to share it with all of you as well. So please read this stuff and let me know about your views whether you agree with the view provided in this article or not.
